Risk and responsible gambling

Last updated 28 October 2026.

Betting is a risk

Every bet can lose. Maths and price comparisons can show how a price compares with others, but they cannot remove risk or promise a profit, and prices can be wrong or out of date. Treat any money you bet as money you can afford to lose.

Keep it under control

  • Set a budget and a time limit before you start, and stick to them.
  • Never chase losses, and never bet with money meant for bills or essentials.
  • Take breaks, and don't bet when you are stressed, upset or have been drinking.
  • Use the deposit limits, reminders and time-outs that bookmakers offer.

Signs it may be a problem

Spending more than you meant to, borrowing to bet, hiding it from people close to you, or feeling anxious when you are not betting can all be signs that gambling is becoming a problem.

Free, confidential help

  • GamStop: a free scheme that blocks you from gambling websites and apps licensed in Great Britain, for a period you choose.
